Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students
at the University of Chicago
Welcome to the website for the UChicago chapter of SNMA-MAPS!
Who We Are
UChicago SNMA-MAPS
Overview
We are the UChicago chapter of the Minority Association of Pre-medical Students, or MAPS, represents the undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students of the Student National Medical Association.
MAPS represents future underrepresented medical students. Members are creating diversity and making strides in all aspects of medicine and patient care. SNMA has a great interest in increasing the number of physicians of color entering the workforce and know that our pre-medical students are our future colleagues and successors.Through community service and dedication to eliminating ethnic health disparities, we strive to provide ourselves and those around us with a larger sense of being. We stand strong in the light of the many that struggled before us, and are hopeful that we make each step easier for those who come after us. We are leaders in our communities.
Known for our mentorship and pipeline outreach, SNMA is dedicated to ensuring that the needs of pre-medical students are met. SNMA is founded upon the great principles of educating and preparing our members to be the best in the healthcare field and that mentality extends to our pre-medical members.
What We Do
Our organization offers a wide variety of events and programs that contribute to the University of Chicago's life of the mind and a sense of community among faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates in the sciences.
Community Service
We engage in various service projects in our community, such as at St. James Food Pantry.
Medical Student Mentorship
We partner with medical students at the Pritzker School of Medicine to offer undergraduates personal mentorships that will help them navigate the road to their chosen professions.
Panels & Workshops
(summer opportunities, professional development series, etc.,)
We offer a wide variety of panels featuring many different speakers on topics such as summer opportunities, professional development, alternate careers, etc.
American Medical Education Conference
(AMEC—SNMA’s annual national conference)
Our 2017 Annual Medical Education Conference entitled, Lighting the Way: Creating Health Equity through Education, Advocacy and Service, will highlight the importance of community engagement and clinical excellence in solving the health disparities of today. The conference will focus on opportunities for students to grow as future physicians while directly interfacing with the community in Atlanta and elsewhere. AMEC will also feature plenary sessions tackling the complexities of implicit bias and microaggressions in medical education, the impact of violence on public health, and the importance of physician advocacy in health care. Students will be provided with the opportunity to expand their knowledge through a host of innovative professional development workshops, yielding hands-on clinical skills and the tools to plan for their continued success.
